Rheem repair
Rheem heat pump not heating? We fix that.
Your Rheem heat pump runs, ices over, trips the breaker or leaves the pool cold. We fix Rheem heat pumps and gas heaters across Brevard County, Florida.
Start with the nameplate
The suffix on a Rheem heat pump names its defrost design. It decides which tests we run first.
Heat pumps
| On the plate | What it means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| ti | Titanium heat exchanger | The water-side material inside the unit. |
| HC | Heat-cool | Defrost runs through a reversing valve. The only design with a documented cooling function. |
| PD | Power defrost | A hot-gas bypass valve clears ice from the coil. |

Gas heaters
Raypak builds Rheem pool heaters, so your manual may read Rheem Raypak. Plate says Raypak only? See our Raypak repair page.
Why isn't the Rheem keeping up?
Longer runtime on cool nights is normal. Ice that won't clear, a tripping breaker or water that never reaches setpoint is not.
Runs, but the water barely warms
Likely: cooler air, airflow, coil condition, water flow, heat loss without a cover, refrigerant or controls.
You: note setpoint, water temperature, runtime and weather, and keep the air path clear.
The coil frosts, or defrost never finishes
Likely: some defrost is normal. Persistent ice points at airflow, a sensor, the reversing valve, the hot-gas bypass or refrigerant.
You: photograph the coil and the display.
The fan starts, the compressor doesn't
Likely: the control sequence, electrical supply, contactor, capacitor or compressor.
You: stop resetting it, and note what starts and what stops.
The breaker trips at start-up
Likely: wiring, protection devices, a start component or the compressor.
You: leave the breaker off and call us.
The gas heater lights, then drops out
Likely: flame proving, gas supply, ignition, pressure, venting, water flow or a safety control.
You: keep the cabinet closed and never bypass a safety.
The gas heater runs, the water stays cool
Likely: flow, scale, corrosion, heat-exchanger transfer, gas input or controls.
You: keep chemicals out of the heater's inlet line.
Digital models show a message on the board. We read it against the manual for your model instead of guessing.

What we check on a Rheem visit
Two machines, two orders of work. The plate decides which one we follow.
Heat pump
- Confirm the model, suffix and any display message.
- Check the air path, fan and coil.
- Check water flow through the titanium heat exchanger.
- Test the sensors and controls that call for heat.
- Follow the defrost path the suffix names — reversing valve on heat-cool, hot-gas bypass on power defrost.
- Suspect refrigerant and the compressor last, once the cheap causes are ruled out.
Cover the pool at night. The manufacturer's manual puts overnight loss at up to 10°F uncovered, and 4°F or less under a blanket.
Gas heater
- Follow the ignition sequence from the call for heat.
- Watch flame proving, and where it drops out.
- Check gas supply and pressure.
- Check venting and combustion air.
- Check water flow across the copper fin-tube heat exchanger.
- Inspect the heat exchanger for scale and corrosion.

Repair or replace?
A sensor, airflow, contactor or water-side fault is a different decision from a failed compressor, a damaged coil or a control nobody can source.
Points toward repair
- The fault sits outside the sealed refrigerant circuit.
- The model and serial number still match available parts.
- The rest of the unit tests sound under a full heat call.
Points toward replacement
- The compressor or the coil itself has failed.
- The control for that model line is no longer made.
- Cooler-night recovery, cover habits, electrical service, gas supply or pad space have outgrown the unit.

Rheem questions
Is it normal for a Rheem heat pump to defrost?
Yes — defrost is part of the heat-cool and power-defrost designs. Persistent ice, repeated defrost or no heat at all is not.
Why does my Rheem heat pump run longer when nights cool off?
Cooler air holds less heat to move. The same setpoint takes more runtime on a cold Brevard night. If it never reaches setpoint, call us.
What is the difference between M6350ti-E-HC and M6350ti-E-PD?
Defrost design. HC is heat-cool, using a reversing valve; PD is power defrost, using a hot-gas bypass.
Can my Rheem heat pump cool the pool?
Only with the HC suffix, the one Classic design with a documented cooling function. Check the full nameplate first.

Can I replace my Rheem heat pump with gas?
How you use the pool, cooler-night recovery, cover habits and your utilities decide it. Compare gas and heat pumps
