Symptom Check this first What we test
Won't turn on at all Is the pump running? Is the setpoint above the water temperature?
What we test

Lights, then shuts off within seconds Clean the filter and skimmer baskets. Low flow shuts heaters down.

What we test
Gas: water flow and the heat exchanger. Heat pump: airflow, the coil and the defrost sensor.
Breaker trips when the heat pump starts Reset the breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off.
What we test
Contactor, capacitor, wiring and breaker behavior under load. Electrician or us? See who fixes what.
Code on the display Write down the exact code and the model number before you reset anything.
What we test
We read the code against your model and test the part behind it. Codes are on each brand page.
Whistling or unusual noise Clean the filter. Smell gas or exhaust? Follow the safety steps above.
What we test
Heat exchanger, blower, fan, gas valve and airflow path.
Spa or hot tub won't reach temperature Is the heater set to spa, not pool?
What we test

Don't bypass safety controls, force valves or keep resetting a fault you don't know.

Why is my spa or hot tub heater not heating?

Usually the valves, water flow, a sensor or the controls. We find which, even on a spa that shares the pool's heater.

What the spa is doing Check first
The pool warms, the spa stays cool Set the heater or automation to spa. Many heaters hold separate pool and spa settings.
The spa stops a few degrees short Check the spa setpoint and any spa maximum in the heater menu, then test the water.
The heater goes dead when you switch to spa Confirm the pump runs in spa mode and the filter is clean.
The spa takes much longer to heat than it used to Clean the filter, then time how long it takes.

Never heat spa or hot tub water above 104°F. That's a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warning.

"I called Nat/Pro gas for an issue I was having with my pool heater. They called me back immediately, the tech was there the next day, the estimate was extremely reasonable. The service was then completed as scheduled and correctly. I would highly recommend Nat/Pro Gas."

Quick answers

Can a pool heater be repaired?

Usually, yes. Igniters, gas valves, blowers, switches, sensors and control boards are all replaceable parts.

If the heat exchanger or cabinet has failed, weigh repair or replace first.

Can an electrician fix a pool heater?

Sometimes. An electrician can fix the breaker, wiring or disconnect that feeds the heater. Ignition, gas, water flow, sensors and controls need a heater tech.

What does a repair cost?

A service call is $140 local, or $160 in Palm Bay (including Grant), Melbourne Beach, and Titusville.

We diagnose first, then quote the work before we start; the price depends on the failed part and your model. See what repair costs.
