Lochinvar repair
Lochinvar heater or pool boiler down? We fix both.
We fix Lochinvar on Brevard commercial pools: EnergyRite pool heaters, often banked on one header, and Copper-Fin, Knight or Crest boilers heating the pool through an exchanger.
We're licensed for both pool and gas work, so we cover the heater, the gas supply and the pool side.
Which Lochinvar is on your pad?
It is either a pool heater or a boiler that never touches pool water. They fail differently.
EnergyRite pool heaters
ERN runs on natural gas, ERL on propane. The number is the size: 150,000, 199,000, 250,000, 300,000 or 399,000 Btu/hr. A -A suffix means the ASME-rated heat exchanger — the version most commercial pools have.
Every EnergyRite model
Reading the nameplate
| On the plate | What it designates | Why it changes the visit |
|---|---|---|
| ERN | Natural gas | Fuel sets supply pressure and the gas-side tests. We ask for it first. |
| ERL | Propane | Same cabinet, different fuel train and part numbers. |
| 152 / 202 | 150,000 and 199,000 Btu/hr input | On these two sizes, an AUX Device 2 Open message names a field-supplied safety. |
| 252 / 302 / 402 | 250,000, 300,000 and 399,000 Btu/hr input | Here the same message means the low gas pressure switch has not closed. |
| -A | ASME-rated heat exchanger | Changes the exchanger assembly and what an inspection file expects. |
| Cupro-nickel option | Optional heat exchanger material | Cupro-nickel and a bronze header are options, so two identical model numbers can carry different water-side metal. |
Or a boiler feeding an exchanger
A boiler heats a closed loop, and a heat exchanger passes that heat into the pool. So a cold pool has five places to start: the boiler, the loop, the exchanger, the pool-side pump, or the control that ties them together.
What the EnergyRite display is telling you
The display shows faults in words, not numbers. A message names a circuit, never a part.
Three messages worth knowing
Ignition FailureandFlame Sequencehold until someone presses RESET. Clearing them again and again hides the cause.AUX Device 2 Openmeans different things by heater size. Send the size with the message.- Knight, Crest and Copper-Fin II boilers use their own fault text. Send us the exact wording and the boiler model.
EnergyRite messages only. A Knight, Crest or Copper-Fin II boiler uses its own wording.
No match — call us with the model and what the display shows. All 14 EnergyRite fault messages
| Displayed fault | What the manufacturer says it means | What to check or record first |
|---|---|---|
| Pool Standby / Low Water Flow | A call for heat is present, but there is not enough water flow through the heater. | Check the pump runs on the call and the system is full and purged. On a bank, check the header balance. |
| Lockout / Low Water Flow | Low water pressure was sensed while the heater was already running. | Note which heater locked out, and when. A flow fault only at full firing is hydraulic, not the board. |
| AUX Device 1 Open | The field-supplied safety wired into AUX Device 1 has opened — most commonly a flow switch or low water cutoff. | A safety opened; never jumper it. On indirect systems it is usually the loop. |
| AUX Device 2 Open | On 152 and 202 models, the field-supplied safety on AUX Device 2 has opened. On 252 through 402 models, the low gas pressure switch has not closed. | Send the model size with the message. The size decides which meaning applies. |
| Ignition Failure | The heater failed to prove main burner ignition after four attempts. It holds until someone presses RESET on the display. | Stop resetting it. Note how many heaters show it and whether it follows the morning start. |
| Flame Sequence | The flame detector circuit is seeing a flame signal while no flame is present. It also needs a manual reset. | Shut that heater down and report the message word for word. |
| High Limit Open | Outlet water temperature exceeded the fixed setting of the automatic-reset high limit. | Check the loop is full and purged. Repeat trips on one heater in a bank point at its flow. |
| Outlet Temp Exceeded | Outlet temperature went past the maximum allowable outlet temperature. | Record setpoint, inlet and outlet readings together. |
| Inlet Sensor Open / Outlet Sensor Open | The control does not sense the presence of that sensor at all. | Say which one it names. Wiring, sensor or board can be the cause. |
| Sensor Shorted | Either the inlet or the outlet water temperature sensor has shorted. | We measure resistance against the sensor table before ordering one. |
| Air Switch Open | The combustion air chamber is not reaching the proper pressure. | Look for a blocked flue or air inlet, and leave the cabinet closed. |
| Air Switch Short | The control sensed an air pressure switch closure before the blower was powered. | A wiring or switch condition. It does not clear from the display. |
| Proving Switch | An external proving switch has not closed. | Tell us what is interlocked with the heater — louvers, a damper, a house system. |
| Button Malfunction | One of the display buttons has malfunctioned. | Note which button. The manufacturer’s fix is a new board, so send model and serial. |

Symptom, likely cause, next step
On a commercial pool, the useful question is which heater, at what point in the schedule.
One heater in the bank never fires
Usually a flow or gas-supply share problem on the shared header. Read its display before anyone resets it, then compare its valves with the heaters that do fire.
All of them fire, and the pool still loses heat overnight
Often staging that never calls the last stage — a control and sizing question. Log setpoint, actual, ambient and cover use for three nights.
Low Water Flow appears only at peak
A hydraulic problem that tracks bather load or the backwash schedule. Check filter pressure and baskets when the message appears, not after the pool closes.
Ignition faults on the coldest mornings
Every heater calling at full rate at once makes it a gas-supply question. Note how many lock out and in what order. We measure supply pressure; nobody should guess it.
Boiler runs, pool stays cool
A healthy boiler with a narrow pool-side split points at the exchanger or the pool-side circulator, not the burner. We read both sides of the exchanger to tell.
Water under a condensing boiler
A condensing boiler makes water by design. A blocked condensate drain or neutralizer can shut it down and damage what it drips on.

How we work a bank or a boiler loop
A bank fails one heater at a time, usually the one the header treats worst. An indirect system fails quietly: the pool just runs two degrees cool.
On a banked system
- Read every display in the bank before any reset, and write the messages down.
- Check which heaters fire and which are staged off.
- Check the header: valve positions and balance between heaters.
- Check the pool side — filter, baskets, valves.
- Check gas supply with the whole bank calling.
- Only then open a cabinet, model and serial in hand.
On an indirect system
- Find which side is short of heat: boiler, loop, exchanger or pool circuit.
- Read boiler supply and return against pool-side temperatures at the exchanger.
- Check loop flow, air and the pool-side circulator before the burner.
- Inspect the exchanger's pool side for scale and corrosion.
- On condensing equipment, check the condensate path and neutralizer.
- Report the boiler's fault text word for word.
We never jumper an AUX Device 1 safety, keep resetting Ignition Failure or Flame Sequence, or order a sensor before its resistance is checked.
When it is time to replace
- A leaking exchanger or widespread corrosion.
- Several major failures at once.
- A control that can no longer be obtained.
- On a bank, that decision goes in a written quote, not a phone estimate.
Keep chemical feed downstream of the heaters. Scale cuts heat transfer long before anything faults.

Send the Lochinvar details
Send the full model number, the fuel, how many heaters are on the pad, and the fault message word for word. If it is a boiler feeding an exchanger, say so — it changes who we send and what they bring.
Lochinvar questions
Is an EnergyRite a commercial heater or a residential one?
Lochinvar lists it as residential and light commercial. In Brevard it usually turns up in multiples on one header, which makes the job commercial.
I have one EnergyRite at home. Do you fix those?
Yes. Call it in like any other gas heater, with the plate in front of you.
Our pool is heated by a boiler. Do you handle that?
Yes. We quote it through the commercial path, because the job covers the boiler, the loop, the exchanger and the pool side together.
Our heaters are old. Are parts still available?
The EnergyRite line is still current, but a board or sensor for your serial range may not be. We check it against your model and serial.
