Pentair repair

Pentair heater down? We'll trace the fault.

We fix Pentair gas heaters and heat pumps, and we trace the automation call that tells them to heat. Start with the model and the display.

Pentair MasterTemp gas pool heater with E05 on the display and the data plate behind the front access panel, shown through a dashed cutaway.

Which Pentair is on your pad?

The rating plate tells you. Three Pentair families share one badge, and each fails its own way.

MasterTemp and Max-E-Therm gas heaters

Two separate gas lines with different model families. We read the plate before we read a code.

UltraTemp heat pumps

Pentair's electric heat pump. No burner, no pilot, so it gets its own diagnosis.

IntelliCenter and EasyTouch automation

The panel makes the heat call. Panel, heater and pool or spa source all have to agree before heat starts.

Off the rating plate

Model line, model number, fuel type — then the exact display code.

Symptom, likely meaning, what to do

The same short code can mean different things on different Pentair lines, so read it against your model. Never jumper terminals, bypass a safety switch or open a gas appliance.

Symptom Likely meaning What to do
MasterTemp shows AFS Air-flow switch fault in the MasterTemp safety sequence. MasterTemp manual, Troubleshooting pp. 52–53 Note whether the blower starts.
MasterTemp shows E05 Stack-flue sensor circuit fault. MasterTemp manual, Troubleshooting p. 54 Don't guess at a sensor or board. Note the full display.
MasterTemp shows PS Water-pressure or flow-switch fault. MasterTemp manual, Troubleshooting pp. 51–53 Note what the pump and filter are doing.
MasterTemp burner fires, then shuts off A start check dropped out: ignition proof, gas flow, hot-surface ignition or flame current, or a safety alarm. MasterTemp manual, Troubleshooting p. 52 Note how long it runs and any second code.
IntelliCenter or EasyTouch requests heat, but the heater stays idle RS-485 communication, a fireman's-switch relay, pool/spa source selection, wiring, or heater settings may be stopping the call. Compare the panel's request with the heater display.
Heater works from its local panel, but a programmed pool or spa request does not The automation handoff or pool/spa source selection doesn't match the heater. Note which mode works and which doesn't.
UltraTemp fan runs but water stays cool Could be the compressor, outdoor coil, water flow, sensors, defrost, or electrical controls. Note the display and how it sounds. Gas-heater fixes don't apply.
Max-E-Therm is down and the display does not match MasterTemp codes Max-E-Therm is a separate Pentair gas line with its own model and controls. Photograph the rating plate and display.

How we trace a Pentair fault

A Pentair heat call passes through the automation panel before it reaches the burner. We work in order, so a good board doesn't get replaced for nothing.

  1. We read the plate

MasterTemp, Max-E-Therm and UltraTemp share a badge and little else. A MasterTemp code read on a Max-E-Therm won't match.

  2. We follow the gas start

MasterTemp uses hot-surface ignition, not a standing pilot. MasterTemp manual, Heater Description p. 3 If it lights and drops out, we check flame current, gas flow, the air-flow switch and the other safety alarms.

  3. We check upstream of the heater

A heater that never fires can have a fault in the pump, pressure signal, fireman's-switch circuit or automation relay. A remote-control symptom isn't automatically a failed burner or board. If it's the pump or the relay, we fix that and leave a good heater alone.

  4. We treat a heat pump as a heat pump

UltraTemp has no gas ignition. For an UltraTemp on EasyTouch, Pentair documents a dedicated Heat Pump COM connection. EasyTouch 8 and 4 User's Guide, Wiring UltraTemp p. 67 We check it when the panel and the heat-pump display disagree.

Pentair questions

Does a Pentair UltraTemp have a pilot?

No. UltraTemp is an electric heat pump, so it needs a heat-pump diagnosis, not a gas one.

What decides repair versus replacement on a Pentair heater?

The model, age, failed part, equipment condition, parts availability and automation scope. Call us and we'll start there.

Tell us the model and the code

MasterTemp, Max-E-Therm, UltraTemp and automation faults each need different tests. Call us with the model and the display code.

or text (321) 536-9122 Include photos of the fault on the display and the rating plate.
