What does my Hayward heater's code mean?
The code names the check your heater stopped on: ignition, a pressure switch or the blower. Our testing names the failed part.
Gas H-Series and Universal H-Series codes. A HeatPro's codes are further down the page.
No match — call us with the model and what the display shows.Where it stopped
-
Pre-purge
The blower clears the cabinet before any gas flows.
-
Post-purge
The blower keeps running for 30 seconds after the burner stops. That is normal.
Sequence per Hayward's published sequence of operation.
Stopped at the blower
-
AO
The blower vacuum switch is open.

Hayward's checks
Gas supply on, and the heater's internal gas valve set to ON. Then the flame-sensor and gas-valve connections, inlet and manifold gas pressure, and the gas valve or control board. Hayward's answer
-
HF
Heat or flame is sensed when the gas valve should be off.

Hayward's checks
24 VAC at the gas valve against manifold pressure, then the gas valve or control board. Hayward's answer
Water and temperature

Code on the display? Call (321) 536-9122 and read it to us with the model number.

Resetting past BD, FC4 or HF trades a fault we can diagnose for a bigger one.
Why won't my Hayward pool heater turn on?
Check three things first:
- Still blank? Then it's a power fault: source power, voltage selector plug, fuses FC1 and FC2, transformer. That's our work.
- On a Hayward Omni system, "Heating" with no heat most often means the heater isn't in bypass mode (
bo). If the automation itself has failed, that's our work too.
Why does my Hayward light, then shut off?
It stopped on one of its own checks, and the display names which: IF, LO or HS.
- About 30 seconds of blower after the flame goes out is normal post-purge.
IFagain and again means we test the gas supply, flame sensor and gas pressures.- Smell gas after it cuts out? Leave the heater off, move away, and follow the gas-smell steps.
Can I order the Hayward part the code names?
Not from the code alone. Each code points to several parts, and we test to find the one that failed.
- IF The gas valve or the control board, after gas supply, flame sensor and pressure are ruled out.
- AO The blower vacuum switch, its tubing, or the blower.
- LO The water pressure switch, a high limit or the vent pressure switch.
- IOFC4 The ignitor or the blower.
Where can I find my Hayward pool heater manual?
Enter the full model number from the data plate in Hayward's Product Resource Search.
Send the Hayward details
Put the model number and the display code in the details field, and we'll call back ready to diagnose.
What is my HeatPro's display telling me?
A HeatPro code names a flow, pressure or defrost state. The label depends on the unit's generation.
- Current MCHX
- FLOLPHP
- Older HeatPro
- PSHI
What do FLO, LP and HP mean on a current HeatPro MCHX?
FLO is water-flow trouble. LP is low pressure — airflow, low refrigerant or low ambient conditions. HP is high pressure, usually flow or load. MCHX troubleshooting guide.
Is dEF on a Hayward HeatPro a failure?
Not necessarily. dEF is defrost mode, and no action is needed during the cycle. If heat doesn't return afterwards, call us.
Why is there water under my Hayward HeatPro?
Condensation, most of the time. Hayward counts three to five gallons an hour as normal in humid conditions. Condensation dries after the unit stops; a true leak keeps running.
HeatPro still not heating? Call (321) 536-9122 or schedule service. Schedule Service or call (321) 536-9122.
Repair or replace the Hayward?
The failure type decides more than the age. A failed sensor or ignitor is a part swap; a leaking heat exchanger changes the conversation.
Usually a component repair
- Sensor, switch or high limit
- Ignitor or flame sensor
- A fault in the low-voltage wiring
- Blower motor
- The ignition-control board itself
Changes the conversation
- Leaking heat exchanger
- A second exchanger failure on the same unit
- Failed compressor on a HeatPro

Can a tune-up keep a Hayward out of this?
Partly. Sooting from a poor fuel-air mix damages exchangers; our gas tune-up checks for a safe, efficient burn.
Balanced water and a clean filter protect the exchanger between tune-ups.
